The Tangled Web

| Jeremy | What was that? |
| Waitress | It's this storm, sir. It's playing havoc with the power supply. I shouldn't be surprised if we don't have a power cut tonight. |
| Jeremy | Did you find Dr Brown? |
| Waitress | Sir? |
| Jeremy | The bag I found in the lift. It had the name Dr A Brown written on it. |
| Waitress | Yes sir. Dr Ann Brown. I returned the bag to the lady straightaway. |
| Jeremy | I daresay she was pleased to get it back. |
| Waitress | Well, yes and no, sir. |
| Jeremy | What do you mean? |
| Waitress | She said that something had been taken out of the bag. She made me feel quite guilty the way she went on about it. But then I told her about the trouble we'd had recently in the hotel. |
| Jeremy | What trouble? |
| Waitress | Things going missing, sir. First there was the rat poison. |
| Jeremy | Rat poison? |
| Waitress | Yes, sir. And then there was the bread knife. Mrs Salt the cook was very upset about that. It was her own knife that she always uses. |
| Jeremy | How very strange. Have the police been informed? |
| Waitress | Oh no, sir. I'm sure they'll turn up. |
